Two derivatives are also found: Cetyl Tranexamate Mesylate, a stabilised and oil-soluble form designed for better penetration, and Potassium Tranexamate, a water-soluble salt variant. All three produce similar effects; the derivatives are formulation choices rather than meaningful performance differences.

What makes tranexamic acid distinctive in the tone-evening category is that its mechanism is narrower and more specific than that of broad antioxidants like vitamin C or multi-action ingredients like niacinamide. It is narrower than general brighteners. For overall skin dullness or broad, low-contrast uneven tone, niacinamide and vitamin C usually do more useful day-to-day work. Tranexamic acid’s strength is the more specific UV- and inflammation-linked pigmentation pathway — using it for general brightening is a mismatch of ingredient and concern.

It does not treat active inflammation. Like niacinamide and vitamin C, tranexamic acid works on pigmentation rather than on the underlying reactivity that causes it. If your skin is still flaring regularly, the most useful intervention is calming the flares (with ingredients like cica, panthenol, or ectoin) before focusing on the marks they leave behind — otherwise the marks keep coming at roughly the rate tranexamic acid is fading them.
