Vitamin E (as Tocopherol): extends vitamin C’s effective lifespan in the formula and complements its action on the oil-soluble side of the cellular membrane. On its own, vitamin E is useful but limited. Paired with vitamin C, it roughly doubles the combined antioxidant performance compared to either ingredient alone.

Ferulic acid: a plant-derived antioxidant that stabilises the vitamin C + vitamin E combination, further extending stability and boosting the combined antioxidant performance. The original research suggests that adding ferulic acid to a 15% L-Ascorbic Acid + 1% Tocopherol system roughly doubled measured photoprotection in that model, from about fourfold to about eightfold — a large effect for a skincare claim.

Vitamin C forms

  • L-Ascorbic Acid (or just Ascorbic Acid) — the pure, gold-standard form. Most clinically studied, most effective, least stable. Typical effective concentration 10–20%. Oxidises in opened bottles within weeks to months.
  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP) — a more stable derivative. Less potent than L-Ascorbic Acid but well tolerated by sensitive skin. Often used in lighter, more comfortable formulations.
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) — another stable derivative. Similar profile to SAP; some evidence for slightly stronger tone-evening support.
  • Ascorbyl Glucoside — a glucose-linked derivative, very stable. Converts to vitamin C slowly once absorbed. Milder but slower.

How to spot a good formula

Vitamin C is one of the ingredients where label-reading most directly translates to product performance. A few practical signals to look for.

The form is named specifically. A product that says ‘Vitamin C’ without specifying the INCI form is usually a red flag. Reputable sensitive-skin formulas name the specific derivative, and well-built Defence System products often name all three ingredients openly.

Packaging matters more than for most ingredients. L-Ascorbic Acid is notoriously unstable in light and air. Look for opaque or darkly-tinted bottles, airless pumps, or packaging designed to minimise exposure. A vitamin C serum in a clear bottle with a dropper is either using a stable derivative or has not been formulated with much care.

Concentration should be sensible. For L-Ascorbic Acid, 10–15% is usually the effective range; higher concentrations often do not improve results and can increase irritation. For stable derivatives, 2–10% is typical and perfectly adequate.

Vitamin C is useful, but expectations still need proportion.

Vitamin C is not a substitute for SPF. It is a daytime complement to sunscreen, not a replacement for it. Antioxidant defence catches what filters miss; it does not do filtering itself. Any marketing suggesting vitamin C serums reduce the need for SPF is getting this relationship backwards.
